Similarity and equality demonstratives in Kambaata
Résumé
After a general introduction into comparative, equative and similative constructions, the paper focusses on a discussion of the morphology and the deictic and non-deictic uses of simlarity and equality demonstratives in Kambaata, a Highland East Cushitic of Ethiopia. Kambaata is shown to spread the tasks of a deictic degree modifier, quality modifier and manner modifiers (at least) across three types of demonstratives, the adjectival degree modifier kanká(ta), the nominal quality modifiers hittigoon-á(ta) and hittigaam-ú/-íta, and the verbal manner modifer hittíta and formally related synonyms.
