Poets and Arms: The Culture of War in Carducci and Pascoli
Poeti e armi : la cultura della guerra in Carducci e Pascoli
Résumé
This article examines how the two poets Giosuee Carducci and Giovanni Pascoli spread nationalistic ideologies through the poetic construction of the myth of war and virility of Italian warriors between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. With their rhetoric, they prepared their fellow citizens to idealize the wars. Their legacy was crucial for the next generation of nationalists (especially D’Annunzio) that pushed Italy to participate in the Great War.
