Jules Dupuit’s Analysis of Population through the Prism of His Conception of General Welfare
Résumé
Jules Dupuit is known for his contribution to public economics. But he also discusses other issues such as population. However, scholars mainly focus on articles in which Dupuit only discusses population with regards to the problem of poverty and misery. This leads them to consider his analysis as only concerns by the level of population. In this paper, I argue that Dupuit discusses population from two points of view (its level and its structure) which derives from his conception of general welfare. After specifying, Section 1, his conception of general welfare, I clarify his analysis of population in Section 2.
