Primate Conservation and Ecohealth

Abstract

So far, 27 species and 46 taxa of primate have been recorded in China. Thus, China has more primate species or taxa than any of the countries in north hemisphere and it is listed as one of the 5 top primate range countries in the world. As China has been gearing high in economic development for over two decades, much of the primary forest, which is of high eco-resilience, in the country has been converted or degraded and this has resulted in more geo-disastrous events in terms of occurrence and scale. Such facts have made more and more Chinese people have realized that eco-health is essential for human’s long term welfare and public awareness for environment conservation has been promoted dramatically in last decade. Thus, it is crucial to come up a good guideline in guiding the effort. Generally speaking, we think China environment conservation should be three strategies: 1) primates and forest; 2) ungulates and grassland; 3) migrate birds and wetland. All the primate species, including gibbons and monkeys, are all very sensitive to environment variation and most of them are primary forest dependents. Besides, many gibbon and monkey species are beautiful and attractive to public attention. Protecting them will certainly benefit their habitats. We’ve developed a map for primate distribution in China and we believe all the sites with primate occurrence should be of high eco-health significance. Therefore, we hope this effort will be a reference in guiding China’s national eco-health strategy development.
