Driving in an anger state: impact on the car-following performance and the pedestrian detection

In driving, anger seems to promote stronger accelerations and higher speed. Moreover it is known that anger can cause a focalization towards its source, leading to inattention. The present study aimed to assess the effects of anger on the pedestrian detection, and the car-following performance in car simulator. We hypothesized that angry drivers would have a reduced car-following performance, and that the distraction elicited by the source of anger could lead to a later pedestrian detection. Participants were separated into two groups. The Anger group was induced using a driving task where a vehicle impeded participant drive. For the Control group no impediment was generated. Before and after the induction, all participants drove on an experimental scenario during which they had to complete a car-following task and a pedestrian detection task at the same time. The pedestrians were placed at the roadside: alone, at the opposite of a neutral vehicle, or at the opposite of the anger-inducing vehicle. Distance of detection and car-following performance indicators were recorded. Contrary to our hypotheses, the presence of the anger-inducing vehicle had no negative effects on the distance of pedestrian detection. Moreover, when the pedestrian was alone, the Anger group detected the pedestrians from a longer distance than the Control group. However, between the first and the second experimental scenario, the Control group improved its reactivity to the lead vehicle speed changes, whereas the Anger group stagnated to their initial performance. These results may be explained either by a different allocation of attention from the two groups or a difficulty to quickly react to change speed for anger drivers.
