Characterization of rare-earth aluminum oxynitrides synthesized by carboreduction and nitridation

Résumé

Over the recent years, a great interest has been shown for multinary oxynitrides containing main group elements especially in the fields of phosphors or visible-light driven photocatalysts. However if a tremendous work has been done on nitridosilicates and nitridoalumonisilicates based materials, very little is know about multinary (oxy)nitride systems based on aluminum (R2AlO3N, RAl12O18N), gallium (La2GaN3) or phosphorous (Zn2PO3N). A large part of our research is then devoted to the preparation of new materials among those systems by exploring less-common synthesis routes than the usual solid state reaction or the ammonia flow-based nitridation. As a first step of the present work, we have successfully reinvestigated the preparation of the R2AlO3N oxynitrides (R = Nd and Sm) using the carboreduction and nitridation process (CRN) according to the following reaction: 2 R2O3 + Al2O3 + 3 C + N2 -> 2 R2AlO3N + 3 CO T = 1200-1300°C The main advantage of this process is to significantly simplify the preparation of those oxynitrides as they werepreviously prepared from mixture of rare-earth oxide and aluminum nitride under pressure of nitrogen in sealed metal tubes. thus it allows the study od derivated systems as the K2NiFA type solid solution AE(1-x)R(x)AlO(4-x)N(X) as well as rare-earth doping for photoluminescence.
