Protecting Mixed-Signal Technologies Against Electrostatic Discharges: Challenges and Protection Strategies from Component to System

Résumé

Mixed-signal technologies such as smart power technologies are used in demanding applications such as the automotive one. In this application, one of the very stringent requirements concerns the robustness to electrostatic discharges (ESD) that still constitutes one of the major causes of re-design and field returns. In this chapter, we review the challenges that have to be tackled both at chip and system levels. With the help of simple examples, we demonstrate that a global ESD protection strategy approach based on efficient predictive modeling is key to reach the goal of zero ppm failure.
