FBMC/OQAM baseband for 5G mobile communication systems: hardware design and on-board prototyping

Résumé

In this talk we present a new design and prototyping experience of an advanced communication system based on filter-bank multi-carrier and offset-quadrature-amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM). This modulation is being studied and considered nowadays by recent research projects as a key enabler for the future flexible 5G air interface. It exhibits better spectrum shape compared to the traditional OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) and enables better spectrum usage and mobility support. In this context, a complete and efficient hardware implementation on an FPGA-based digital baseband (DBB) platform is proposed. This work is done in the framework of METIS (Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society, ICT-317669), the EU flagship 5G project, with the objective of laying the foundation for 5G systems and building consensus prior to standardization.
