Résumé

Analytical tools are needed to enable the creation of additional airspace structures to accommodate the high demand for capacity in the European airspace, which can see up to 27,000 flights operating across 1,500 sectors. A new functionality, the Strategic OPtimisation (SOP) model, is a tool for making best use of a single European sky for civil and military users. It is an iterative and incremental way to make best use of overall capacity. A test in the core space of European airspace showed it can efficiently spread the traffic around and suggests there is ample room for adding capacity through the use of such models.
