Leadership and Organizational Learning in Extreme Situations.

Abstract

Pascal Lievre and Geraldine Rix-Lievre present a comparative study of two polar expeditions. They suggest that polar expeditions provide an opportunity to learn about managing the unexpected (Aubry, Lievre & Hobbs, 2010). They discuss Nansen’s 1892 expedition to the North Pole and Franklin’s 1855 expedition to the Northwest Passage. Franklin’s expedition is considered one of the greatest disasters in Arctic exploration, while Nansen’s expedition is one of its greatest achievements. Lievre & Rix-Lievre compare these two polar expeditions to assess their implications on organizational learning.
