Banārasīdās et Jean-Baptiste Tavernier : feux croisés sur l’histoire économique de l’Inde au XVIIe siècle
Résumé
This paper would like to present two personal tales putting a light on the economic history of the seventeenth-century India. The first one is the Ardhakathānaka by Banārasīdās, a Jain merchant from Jaunpur, and the second one is Les six voyages by Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a French traveler and trader. Both texts evoke in a living style the apprenticeship of Indian traders, the way to create societies and to make business, how to get money in order to start a new business, the role of the bankers, the use of bills of exchange (hundi), and how the merchants travel during their business trip.
