Convolution of orbital measures on symmetric spaces: a survey
Abstract
This survey summarizes a long and fruitful collaboration of the authors on the properties of the convolutions of orbital measures on symmetric spaces or, equivalently, on the product formula for spherical functions on such spaces. A special accent is put on recent results in the singular case. They are presented in a simplified and unified manner in this survey. New results for the flat symmetric spaces are also included, including a new short proof of the Thompson's conjecture in the complex case. Important open problems and possible applications of our results are proposed.
