Collective activity of football officials as it occurs

Résumé

Introduction: To investigate the cognition within a team of football officials, we scrutinized their inter-individual activities. Method: We studied two games in a professional football championship. We worked with two teams of officials. Games were filmed from the stands, and individual self-confrontation interviews were realised. Verbalization analysis and video description were combined. Results and discussion: The assistant and replacement referees develop a specific awareness about the doubt the referee express in decision making process. They evaluate the preoccupations of the referee in a timing enabling to make appropriate information manifest in order to assist the referee by contributing toin his decision making process . Their individual awareness toward referee’s behaviours enables to construct a mutual intelligibility of the opponent physical confrontations.
