Scenario Based Evaluation of Biometric Sensor

Résumé

Biometrics becomes to be more and more used for industrial applications (passports, physical or logical access control, etc.). The evaluation of biometric systems is crucial and should take into account usability and security issues. Few studies have been dedicated to evaluate biometric systems in terms of usability. For example, the NIST Biometrics Usability group performed an experiment [1] to evaluate positioning fingerprint sensors at different angles and usability test. This type of study allows the selection of the most reliable technologies of fingerprint sensors for public and private use. The ISO/IEC 19795-2 standard [2] presents scenario based evaluation of biometric sensors. Based on this idea, we developed the EVABIO acquisition platform that enables the evaluation of biometric systems using multiple scenarios. The platform can evaluate, at the same time, the performance of a biometric system, the quality of biometric data provided by the sensor and the users' acceptance and satisfaction [3]. The main contribution of the paper is the proposal of a platform that facilitates a scenario-based evaluation of a biometric system. The proposed methodology consists in first describing an evaluation scenario, which includes the aim of the evaluation, the environment with fixed and variable parameters (such as room light or temperature), the acquisition process, and the evaluation methodology. Then, an XML file is created according to the scenario, describing the different sequences of the acquisition process. That file can contain several kinds of sequences such as presentation steps displaying information to the user, acquisition steps for the biometric data acquisition, and questionnaire steps for the acquisition of users' viewpoint of sensors usability. An XML file pilots the acquisition platform the user is interacting with. Thus, the acquisition process is fully automated, which guarantees its reproducibility for each user. The platform can interact with several devices such as a touch screen and sensors, biometric and non-biometric ones. An experiment has been conducted on a group of 44 individuals to assess the acquisition process, using three vendor fingerprint sensors: two capacitive and an optical one. For that experiment, the platform includes an IP camera to film the acquisition process, in order to have a feedback and to analyze acquisition errors. This platform computes many evaluation criteria (performance, NFIQ quality metric, and user's acceptance).
