The regional changes induced by the temporary but solid implantation of a Church capital in Avignon have nourished many studies over the last century andn still raise many questions. The studies of Daniel Le Blévec have brought to them very useful tools, and in a stimulating framework of thought invites us to rethink the history of the 14th century Avignon region in the geographical space of the Lower Rhone valley where the river was more a link than a frontier. He also invites us to place this history in a long chronological period from the 12th to the 15th century. His fundamental work on assistance to the poor invites us to be careful by suggesting that the specificities of Avignon were perhaps not so original in spite of the presence of the bridge and its charity - which have recently been the subject of new investigations - and the establishment of a Pontifical charity. In addition, the interest of D. Le Blévec for the Cartusian Order, represented by two establishments near Avignon, nourished his reflection on the spiritual impact of the Pope's presence and the uneasiness engendered by the political implantation of the Church. He thus proposed a model of regional history articulated around the major problems of the time, refusing any narrow localism and thematic confinement.
