We demonstrate the importance ofthe relays for coverage and capacity enhancement and studyhow the number of relays and their position inside the cellimpact the performance, and how an efficient relay locationscheme can guarantee better performance with less relays percell. Further we give an estimation of the amount of powerper square meter on the ground when relays are used, withrespect to traditional network, showing the fundamental role ofrelays for green networking. We consider the downlink of anLTE-Advanced network, in which all the User Equipments (UE)are supposed to be attached to the eNode-B (eNB) or RelayNode (RN) from which they receive more power. Numericalresults are obtained through Monte-Carlo simulations and theperformance measures are represented by the average effectiveSignal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) and the averagespectral efficiency. %G English %2 https://hal-imt.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00721231/document %2 https://hal-imt.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00721231/file/sarnoff11relays.pdf %L hal-00721231 %U https://hal-imt.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00721231 %~ INSTITUT-TELECOM %~ CNRS %~ ENST %~ TELECOM-PARISTECH %~ PARISTECH %~ LTCI %~ INFRES %~ RMS %~ INSTITUTS-TELECOM
