Implementation of broadband microstrip-u coupled patch array on SI/BCB membrane for beamforming applications at 60 GHZ

Résumé

In this paper, an antenna array and MEMS RF based-phase shifters connected together on the same Silicon / BCB substrate, are developed for beamforming applications at 60 GHz. The antenna array is made of 1×2 patch antenna integrated upon a silicon / BCB membrane. A U-shape microstrip line feeds each antenna through a dielectric gap. Thanks to such a coupling, the network bandwidth is increased and the 60 GHz band, covered. The gain average of the antenna array measured between 55 GHz and 65 GHz equals 9.5 dBi. For phase shifts of 90°, the antenna beam can point between ± 30°. This technique strongly improves the link budget in comparison with the use of a single antenna.
