Experimental Study of the Effect of Fuel Properties on the Diesel Injection Process

Résumé

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the influence of fuel density and fuel viscosity on the flow characteristics and on the spray development process generated from a high pressure diesel injector. Results show that increasing fuel viscosity leads to a decrease of the discharge coefficient only for low injection pressures while density is the main parameter driving the mass flow rate. The spray pattern is also affected since dense and viscous fuels tend to induce a longer spray tip penetration with a more narrow spray angle. This study provides some information in order to better understand the effect of the fuels physical properties in the diesel combustion process.
