ICNIRP perspectives on safety factors, terminology and exposure limit setting
Résumé
ICNIRP is in the process of completing its series of EMF guidelines. These have been adopted, with modifications in some instances, by many countries worldwide. A short review of the recently published documents will be given (static, low-frequency and radiofrequency guidelines and statements). The current evolution of guidelines setting by ICNIRP will be described. In the last years, in the course of the revision of guidelines, some changes have been made in terms of terminology and approach that will be described and justified taking examples in the EMF range. The core foundation of ICNIRP's guidelines setting, which is in principle independent of the technology, is a health risk assessment process based on science. The collaboration with WHO and other scientific bodies in that respect will be discussed along with the future of such collaborations and future revisions of the guidelines, in the RF range in particular.
