The early Christian iconography of Orpheus and its possible meanings

Résumé

The paper shows the way in which Clement of Alexandria builds his picture of a new Orpheus by using the image of the singer and, by doing so, transforms Orpheus into a prefigurative counterpoint to Christ. Then the Christian iconography of Orpheus and its possible meanings are examined. A comparison is finally drawn between the painters' aims and those of Clement.
