An Experimental test for cracking concrete under controlled

Résumé

A satisfying description of the microstructure of an heterogeneous material such as concrete should take into account the presence of cracks. Indeed, their inevitable presence weaken the porous matrix resistance and constitutes a preferential flow path for fluid, gas and pollutants: material durability is therefore seriously affected. In this paper, we present an experimental displacement controlled test aiming at cracking concrete under mastered conditions. The Brazilian splitting test is an interesting experimental procedure aimed at the identification of concrete fracture parameters [1]. Under appropriate boundary conditions, this test can be used for generating/closing/propagating a single, crack. Crack width is included in real time measurements of the diameter variations of the sample, used for the control, and is also monitored using a digital image correlation technique [2,3]. In the long term, such a diameter-controlled test can be coupled with permeability/diffusivity real time measurements, i.e. a permeability/diffusivity vs. crack width law can be stated.
