L'intonème conclusif : une fin (de phrase) en soi ?
Résumé
It has been abundantly stated in the literature that oral sentences are marked by specific prosodic contours transcribed as B-B- and manifested by a fundamental frequency (Fo) fall into the infra low pitch level. This seems to be true for “neutral” sentences, but apparently not for maximal prosodic units of spontaneous speech in French, especially in the following cases: 1. Comments following a declarative topic end with a flat Fo, comments following an interrogative topic end with a rising Fo contour; 2. In spontaneous speech, the end of sentences is often punctuated by a segmental marker in final position which generally does not follow a final B-B- contour; 3. The French specific contrast of Fo slope indicates a dependency relation to the right, and frequently induces a falling B-B- contour which is definitively not in sentence final position; 4. If a speech turn is considered as the maximum discourse unit, other speakers can take their speech turn even if it is not terminated by a B-Bcontour; 5. When speakers generate a long set of prosodic segments (which can be easily longer than a minute) it seems difficult to admit that final B-Bcontours integrate all the preceding segments.
