PIXFEL©, A TOOL FOR THE QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF APPLES IN BULK SHIPPING BINS AT HARVEST TIME

Résumé

The early knowledge of apples quality level is a mandatory tool for marketing and sale management. This knowledge allows to estimate what could be the real quality of batches of fruits at the end of the storage period, and then to establish an appropriate strategy for putting these batches on the market, for anticipating trade planning and to increase the farmer incomes. The goal of Pixfel© is to have an automatic early estimation of apples quality, such as grade, cuticle coloration and, later, major surface defects such as russeting, bitter pit, soft scald, decay... This estimation thanks to Pixfel© is planned to take place between orchard where fruits are put into bulk shipping bins and cold storage where the fruits will remain for several months. The proposed tool Pixfel©, is currently being tested, since the 2004 harvest, to verify and validate the adequacy between the results provided by the image analysis and the exhaustive measurements operated on the batches of fruits. During the growing season 2007, this tool was daily used by the most important apple grower in France (SCICA Castang) which is a partner of this project
