TEM-horn antennas for generation and detection of terahertz pulses

Abstract

We have studied a new kind of terahertz antenna: transverse electromagnetic horn antennas (TEM-HA). These antennas have interesting characteristics for THz applications: large bandwidth, low reflection coefficient, good directivity and low dispersion. TEM-HA have been designed by simulation and measured thanks to a time-domain experiment. The reflection coefficient is less than -10 dB at frequencies from 100 GHz to in excess of 1 THz. A terahertz ranging experiment is carried out in a monostatic configuration and a radiated mean power up to 5.6 muW is measured.
