Function to feature mapping using ontologies for interoperability in cooperative product development

Résumé

Implementing collaborative work in product development is complex due to heterogeneity of phases involved in this process. In the earlier phases of product development, product related information, such as requirements and functions, are often expressed in natural language while in latest phases, they are more formalized. The main difficulty consists in translating informal information to formalized data. Our objective is to improve interoperability between different phases evolved in product development. One way to achieve this is to allow a better data exchange among phases such as design, process planning and manufacturing. We propose a methodology for function to form mapping. This methodology is based on the development of an intermediary model, which consists in the translation of product functions in a set of constraints on physical parameters influencing the shape of the product. We also propose a methodology to improve interoperability between design and process planning. This methodology is based on features. We have developed an ontology representing features and we have used it as a neutral format for data exchange between design and process planning. In this paper we propose to extend these two approaches in order to associate functions and features.
