              <p>Odour emissions from landﬁll sites lead to serious nuisances within surrounding communities. An effective landﬁll operation management requires an accurate evaluation of the occurrence and extent of odour pollution events. The main objective of this study is to identify relationships between odour emission rates, local atmospheric dynamics and odour pollution events from a landﬁll located in complex terrain. An approach coupling ﬁeld data and numerical modelling has been used to identify potential links. Numerical simulations have been conducted with the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) model with several nesting levels. The coarser domain was driven by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) gridded analyses. The ﬁner grid encompassed a domain of about 10 km × 10 km with a 100- m horizontal resolution. A speciﬁc eulerian model of dispersion has been developed to follow odours. Marked passive scalars have been emitted from exploited cells every 15 min. Emission rates have been computed from concentration measurements realized during of a week day. A set of atmospheric scenarios leading to odour pollution at the local scale have been built from meteorological data and complaints received from the surrounding communities using data classiﬁcation. The model has been set up to simulate two periods which favoured odour pollution in winter and in summer. Predicted location of odour intensities are in good agreement with the complaints. The contributions of all passive scalars to the threshold exceedance have been evaluated in order to identify the more annoying emission periods. The majority of odour pollution events are explained according to local meteorology throughout the nycthemeral cycle. Complaints are likely to be due not only to emission peaks during daytime but also to a constant emission during nighttime. Stable nocturnal conditions conﬁne odours near the ground surface and contribute to odour pollution in the early morning. The results of this study are expected to be useful to limit risks of odour pollution according to local atmospheric dynamics and to adapt odour mitigating strategies.</p>
