A Control System for Piezoelectric Micro-Pumps

Résumé

The main goal of this project is the development and the optimisation of large scale ink-jet processes and a reduction of the costs of realization. Indeed, we seek to control droplets impacts on various substrates thanks to adapted control algorithms, and thus to optimise printing. We also try to detect the eventual variations due to external perturbations using a simulation tool. Results reported in the literature demonstrate a real lack of complete model to simulate such systems. In this paper, a mathematical model is provided which accounts for the physical behaviour of the drop ejection system, on the basis of the piezoelectric deformation, the fluid velocity and the volume of the ejected drop. More precisely, the fluid flow is modelled using the non-linear flow equations and the images of drop formation are used for calibration purpose. This model gives good results for commercially available printheads where not much is known on the geometrical features. Our work is focused towards the determination of the simplest possible control-command strategy in order to optimize the drop ejection process. For that purpose, a simplified model, which size and complexity are directly related to its accuracy, giving the evolution of the principal physical terms of the fluidic micro system, has been built. Using the simplified model and different types of regulators, we are able to correct deviations of the system.
