Assimilating Identities: Social Networks and the Diffusion of Sections
Résumé
The book is a reconstruction of the history and routes of diffusion of the section system and its associated terminology in the Western Desert of Australia. Combining anthropological, linguistic, historical and statistical approaches, it elaborates a pan-Western Desert view of the distributional pattern of this social category system, and presents pragmatic equivalence rules between the taxonomies used among the various dialectal and regional groups of this cultural bloc. It discusses how the routes of diffusion followed migrational routes, as well as the major axes of Western Desert exchange systems.
