Novel EBG Structure for antennas miniaturization

Résumé

Our aim in this study is to miniaturize a printed antenna by using a novel electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure. This study is the extension of a work [4] made on the miniaturization of antenna using the theory of EBG structures, where we employed an EBG mushroom-like structure [1]. This type of structure presents a complexity in the geometry which is caused by the presence of the metallic "via" connecting patches and metallic surface of structure. This produces two major disadvantages: On one part, it makes CPU time consuming simulations, and on other part, manufacturing the bread boards becomes complex. In this paper, we propose to use a new type of structure without the "via" and based only on square patchs judiciously printed on the two faces of the dielectric substrate of EBG structure. In a first part, we describe the printed antenna on classical ground plane. In the second part, we illustrate the procedure of miniaturization by using the proposed new type of structure. In the third part, we give the results of simulations and measurements obtained and compared with those obtained in the case of the mushroom-like structure.
