Binary superlattices from Fe2O3 magnetic nanocrystals and {Mo132} polyoxometalates: Long-range ordering and modulation of dipolar magnetic interactions

Résumé

Over the last decade, great attention has been devoted to the study of organized assemblies of nanoparticles of different origin. Such new materials are very attractive since their physical properties can be tailored by the controlled interaction and the mutual influence of their constitutive nanoscaled building blocks. In this presentation, we will describe the preparation and complete characterization of new binary superlattices made of the assembly of oleic acid capped ferrite nanocrystals (Fe2O3) and Keplerate ({Mo132}) polyoxometalates (POMs). POMs are nanosized anionic oxo-metal clusters formed by the early transition metals in their highest oxidation state [1, 2]. They offer an endless structural diversity, and remarkable physical properties (electro- and photo reduction, magnetism…). Their counter-cations exchange for long-chain alkyl ammonium cations (dodecyldimethylammonium, DDA) renders them structurally close to capped nanocrystals with similar solubility properties. In this presentation, we give evidence of the feasibility of such nanoparticles/molecules binary systems. We give evidence of the influence of POM on the long range ordering of the 3D superlattices as an increase of the coherence length is observed. In addition we have demonstrated the great potentialities of such binary systems in the modulation of dipolar magnetic interactions between magnetic nanoparticles [3]. [1] M. T.
