Wavelength-dependant Quality of Transmission in WDM Transparent Optical Networks

Résumé

Because no signal regeneration occurs at intermediate nodes of a lightpath, the physical impairments cumulate along the route and corrupts the quality of the transmitted signal. In this context, we developed a tool (described in a previous paper and called BER-Predictor) that evaluates the Quality of Transmission (QoT) and predicts the Bit Error Rate (BER) along a lightpath. This tool takes into account four QoT parameters to compute a global quality factor (Q -factor), namely Chromatic Dispersion (CD), Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD), Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) and nonlinear phase shift (PhNL) whereas, to the best of our knowledge, previous studies compute less general Q factors based on a subset of the four aforementioned parameters. In this paper, we study the impact of wavelength on QoT in the realistic context of the NSFNET backbone network. In this respect, we compute the four QoT parameters and the Q factor on all possible paths of this network for typical wavelengths in the C-band. The obtained numerical results show that for a given route, the achievable range of a lightpath strongly depends on the chosen wavelength. More precisely, we observe that for any path, Q is not a monotonic function of the wavelength.
