Plastics in soils: impacts on agriculture and food
Résumé
The presence of microplastics in soils, revealed a decade ago, remains little known. However, the mass of plastics accumulated in soils could exceed those present in the oceans, particularly for the smallest particles, the microplastics. Microplastics come from uncontrolled dumping, composting, plastic mulching, wastewater irrigation, atmospheric deposition, runoff, etc. Some agricultural soils have accumulated up to several hundred kilograms of microplastics per hectare in just twenty years.
