Waste management
Résumé
The mass contribution of plastics to municipal waste in the United States has risen from less than 1% in 1960 to over 12% in 2018, with very high treatment costs to be paid by local authorities. Around 50% of plastics produced are intended for single use, and almost two-thirds for short use. 80% of the 8.3 billion tonnes of plastics produced since 1950 have ended up in the environment. Municipal waste also contains 34% biowaste, which can be recycled to enrich the soil with organic matter.
