Résumé

Misconceptions, particularly paranormal beliefs, are omnipresent in our contemporary societies. They permeate our daily lives and are introduced into individuals' decisions, behaviors and socialization patterns. Some of them influence consumption choices, others lead to breach of physical and psychological integrity of individuals. In this context, it's essential to understand the processes underlying adherence to paranormal beliefs and to propose tools to overcome it. In this thesis, we are interested in intervention methods that can reduce adherence to paranormal beliefs. To do so, a first step was to address the lack of tools to measure paranormal beliefs. Studies 1 and 2 aimed at validating the Survey of Scientifically Unaccepted Beliefs using the Item Response Theory. Then, we explored two intervention methods that had not yet been adapted to paranormal beliefs : debunking (Study 3) and prebunking (Studies 4 and 5). Debunking proposes to counter an event vector of credulity by presenting a message constructed to limit cognitive processes that would reinforce the belief. This method reduces the adherence to paranormal beliefs, but its effectiveness depends on individual factors such as cognitive style and level of prior beliefs. Pre-bunking consists of inoculating mechanism of credulity through a game (online, constructed for the purposes of the thesis) in order to reinforce the individual's defenses. This method has also been effective in decreasing the perceived reliability of paranormal informations and increasing the confidence of individuals in their judgment. This thesis thus contributes to propose courses of action that can be mobilized in order to decrease the adherence to paranormal beliefs.
