Beyond information gathering: Interviewee details as part of police questioning

Résumé

Investigative interview has two major objectives: gathering information for pursuing the investigation and for Court as well as assessing the witness’s reliability (Kebbell & Wagstaff, 1997). Information-gathering has been extensively studied in laboratory and in the field through the aim of collecting investigation-relevant information (i.e., details concerning action, person, objects, surroundings, sounds and conversation). However, reliability assessment has been carried out essentially pre- or post-interview through the examination of the impact of estimator variables on the quantity and quality of information provided by the witnesses. It is likely that investigative interviewers cover a range of reliability factors while conducting the interview, by asking specific questions related to the interviewee. Per se, the content of police questioning is surely not limited to information-gathering. The aim of this study was to examine to what extent investigative interviewers gather investigation-relevant information (IRI) compared to interviewee details (ID). Fourty-two police officers participated as investigative interviewers and mock witnesses by viewing a crime video, as part of a training course. The interviews were fully transcribed and rated for question content through thematic analyses. IRI questions accounted for 78% of the questions asked, while ID questions accounted for 22% of the questions asked. Police officers asked questions about witnesses’ confidence, their previous knowledge and familiarity with the scene, their location/role in the event. Most of all, police officers assessed the way witnesses perceived investigative-relevant information and the attendant meta-processes. Implications for understanding the objectives of police interviews and for developing effective interviewing protocols will be discussed.
